August in Ridgway and Ouray: The Month Without a Slow Week

Ask someone who has lived in the corridor for a decade what August looks like, and you'll get a shorthand answer built around two or three anchor weekends. The Artist's Alpine Holiday Show. The rodeo weekend up in Ouray. Maybe a night at Fellin Park for music. The rest gets waved off as "just August."

That shorthand is now out of date. The 2026 calendar between Ridgway and Ouray has quietly filled in around the anchors, and the weeknight programming is doing as much work as the marquee events. If you are still planning the month by which Saturdays to keep clear, you are missing most of what is actually happening.

The Weekday Spine

The recurring programming is the part locals underrate. It is what turns a Tuesday into something other than a grocery run, and it is where you tend to see neighbors rather than plates from out of state.

• Friday mornings, Hartwell Park, Ridgway. The Ridgway Farmers Market runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Late-summer produce from the Uncompahgre Valley starts hitting its stride in August, which is a different market than the one in June.
• Saturday mornings, Fellin Park, Ouray. Saturday Yoga at 9 a.m., a modest $10 drop-in, in a park that most people only think of during the music series.
• Wednesday nights, Ouray Elks Lodge #492. Summer Bingo upstairs. Ten dollars for ten games, five for the early birds. It is exactly the kind of civic-scale event that does not exist in resort towns further up the road.
• Live music at St. Elmo Tavern, Ouray. The Summer Sound Series runs midweek through August. Jack Haight's Red Mountain Revival on Wednesday the 5th, Will Overman Band on Tuesday the 11th, and a rolling lineup after that.
• Mountain Air Music Series, Fellin Park. The long-running summer concert program continues its August dates, folk and bluegrass leaning, beer garden, food vendors, and the San Juans as the backdrop.
• On display at 610 Arts Collective, Ridgway. The annual Photography Invitational is up through August, featuring work by Gary Slane and Eric Phillips.

None of this is a headline event. All of it is the reason someone who lives here does not feel like August is a tourist season to be endured.

The One-Off Dates Worth Blocking

Then there is the datebook layer. These are the events that will actually collide with dinner plans if you do not put them on the calendar now.

Two things stand out on that list. The first is the Home Tour & House Show with Emily Scott Robinson on August 2, which pairs a residential tour with an evening set by a songwriter who has a national touring calendar. That is not a template you find in most small mountain towns.

The second is what the Wright Opera House is doing across the month. The 1888 building is running the CO-150 Film Festival on consecutive Wednesdays, alongside a live production of Harvey. A single venue is carrying three different programming formats in three weeks. If you have not been through the doors since the last restoration push, August is the month to go.

Around all of this sits the Artist's Alpine Holiday Show at the Ouray Community Center, an August fixture for more than fifty years, drawing photography, sculpture, printmaking, oil, watercolor and pastel work from across the region. It is one of the few events on the calendar that predates most current residents' arrival, and it still holds its shape.

Where the Dining Scene Actually Sits This August

The restaurant lineup you use to structure an August evening has shifted enough that a summary is worth doing.

Greenwood's in Ridgway is the current all-day anchor. Chef Bill Greenwood is running a Rustic Rocky Mountain menu with American South influences, sourcing from neighboring farms, open from breakfast through dinner. It is the closest thing the corridor has to a chef-driven room that will still seat you at 8 a.m.

Eatery 66 is in its eleventh summer season on Sherman Street, with the 1966 Airstream bar out on the mountain-view patio and a counter-order model that suits a walk-up crowd. Chef Spencer Andersen's résumé runs through Allred's, La Marmotte, and the New Sheridan Chop House, and that Telluride pedigree shows up on the plate in a way most Ridgway visitors do not expect.

Bella Vino is the fine-dining option, run by Chris and Taryn Lee, who took over the family Bon Ton in Ouray, moved up the road to Ridgway in 2022 after a lease change, and brought the Beef Wellington and the wine program with them. If you want the meal that used to require a drive down the switchbacks, it is now in Ridgway.

Kate's Place, Colorado Boy Pub & Brewery, White Buffalo, Lazy Dog Saloon, Taco del Gnar, True Grit Cafe and Thai Paradise round out the working list. The last one is the surprise for anyone who has not been through in a year, and worth a Tuesday.

Ouray-side, note that The Million Roadhouse at MTN Lodge reopened February 1, 2026 after a temporary closure, and Chef Alan is back in the kitchen. If your mental map still has that room dark, update it.

The Quiet Argument the Calendar Is Making

Here is the through-line worth naming. For most of the last decade, August in the corridor read as a spillover month from Telluride, structured around a handful of weekends that pulled visitors north for the rodeo or the arts show. The connective tissue between those weekends was thin, and locals treated the weeknights as recovery time.

That is no longer accurate. Between the St. Elmo Summer Sound Series, the Wright's three-format August at the opera house, the Wednesday bingo at the Elks, the Friday market in Hartwell, and the Saturday yoga at Fellin, there is a programmed weeknight anchor for every day of the workweek. The dining lineup around it has matured in parallel, with three chef-driven kitchens inside a fifteen-minute drive of one another.

The practical read for a resident is that the calendar rewards a different planning habit. Instead of blocking two Saturdays and calling August done, you are picking a weeknight rhythm and letting the Saturdays fall where they fall. That is a small change in how the month feels, but it is the difference between watching a season happen and being inside it.

For anyone considering a move into the corridor, or anyone who owns here but has not spent a full August on the ground in a few years, the honest recommendation is to try the weeknight version once. Pick a Wednesday. Bingo at the Elks at 6, live music at St. Elmo at 6:30, film at the Wright the following Wednesday.
